Setting up a Cheap VPS for Virtualmin and Aegir for VPS Newbies

Aegir .4 Alpha 5 Came out last week and so I thought i would do a quick video for those VPS newbies out.  Aegir really is sweet and if you are wanting to ever just test it, this is a good starting point for you.

This can be done w/ almost any linux VPS host.  I chose to go with Burstnet for the screencast because they got decent reviews from web hosting forums and is DIRT cheap.

I would recommend Linode if you are looking for a good VPS host.  I have a node w/ them and they have always been wonderful.  Don't take my word for it, they have hundreds of reviews all over the web bragging them up.

So don't be scared... jump right in.

Im willing to pay more for a VPS but with good support and no problems ,sugestions??

Hi Peter-

Your slides and videos were invaluable in getting myself up and running Aegir. BurstNet is so wicked cheap, it is great for setting up some test sites to learn how to use Drupal.

I collected my notes from my process of installing Aegir on Ubuntu 10.04 at BurstNet here: http://blog.jesselittlewood.com/node/1

Might be helpful for other folks.

Thank you again for giving me this idea!
Jesse

Thanks for linking to your notes. I'm sure that will help out a lot of people. Aegir is a little different since I made that video. I should probably do an updated video showing multiple server stuff.

By the way, if you see this error:

[Mon Feb 08 13:26:02 2010] [error] VirtualHost :80 -- mixing * ports and non- ports with a NameVirtualHost address is not supported, proceeding with undefined results

then it simply means you are using an older version of Ubuntu, with uses the syntax "" instead of "" so just edit /var/aegir/config/vhost.d/aegir.webproworkshop.com (whatever it is named as per your system) accordingly. Jaunty and Karmic will be fine without making any changes).

You may need to make other changes, according to your Linux distribution and release. I had to remove the NameVirtualHost statement at the beginning, after getting the following warnings, because the statement was repeated in my oldish Apache settings:

[warn] NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts
[warn] NameVirtualHost *:0 has no VirtualHosts

apache2ctl restart

#

All was well, as soon as I could do an apache restart with no warnings or errors

To anyone trying this... if you run into locale problems after apt-get upgrade, the post below might help.

[...] just re-did my VPS that is located at Burstnet, the same cheap VPS I talked about before.  This time around I ran into a couple of issues and decided to only use webmin instead of the [...]

Jamie,

I havent really been using my burstnet host that much since I posted this video, but the little I haved use... seems decent.

I plan on running it a lot harder this next month. My plan is to put up several (ie, 10-20) drupal sites on it, some of them aggravating sites and are more resource intensive. I am also going to be running a couple of other custom scripts that can be heavy sometimes too... I'll let you know how it goes.

Hello Peter,

Just watched your video's - thanks for the excellent info well presented. I am currently using VPSVille which I thought was quite a good deal but burst.net seems cheaper and provide more resources for the money. I know cheap isn't everything but I wondered what your experience with Burst.net has been like. How reliable have they been and would you consider them for production sites - I pretty sure drupal would thrive with more RAM etc - expecially if it is reliable.

TIA,

JamieT
