Using Spacific Google Website Optimizer Variations along with its Matching PPC Ad
Boy thats a mouthfull of a title, does that make sense to anyone?
Let me explain, google website optimizer allows you to do A/B or multivariate testing on web pages. It basically allows you to create several different variations of the same page, and it will treat it like just one page to site visitors.
When a user goes to a page your testing, Google website optimizer will send that user to either the original page (page-A) or a "variable" page (page-B). It is somewhat random the first time the user lands on the page but anytime after that, the user always goes to the same page. So if the user lands on page-B they will always land on page-B (unless they clear their cookies and cache).
So great... whats the problem with that. That works great for all my other traffic, but not for my PPC ads. My PPC ads state that x costs $300, but I am testing pages x that costs $500... I want to match up my spacific adwords ads with the spacific variation.
Heres an Example:
Page-A is a landing page for dog food. The original page states dog food is $300 a bag. I want to see what happends to my conversion rates if I change it to $500 a bag.
I have PPC ads pointing at my page and they state that it costs only $300 a bag.
I create some extra new PPC ads that state I dog food costs $500 a bag.
I setup an A/B test, with my control (page-A) and my new variable (page-B). Now when a user goes to mysite.com/page-A they might be automatically redirected to mysite.com/page-B... but only sometimes...
The Problem:
If I link my $300 PPC ads to page-A, those users might sometimes get redirected to page-B which costs $500. This makes user very mad and he runs away to the competitor.
The Solution:
You need a "special" link that forces G-website optimizer to use which variation you want. Here is how you find this link:
- Go login to your Google website optimizer account.
- Go into your "experiment" settings.
- Click the "Preview" link under "Settings and Design"
You will get a page that pops up on which you can select your variation with a link to the variation right next to it:

This took me forever to figure out because I kep looking for "adwords integration." There is obviously none because the solutions is soooo stink'n simple.
- adwords /
